Oulu Cathedral

Oulu Cathedral and the church buildings that preceded it have played an important role in the city centre since the late 1500s. Completed in 1832, the stone church, designed by C.L. Engel, is one of the focal points and landmarks of maritime Oulu. The wooden parts of the predecessor of the present cathedral, designed by Daniel Hagman in 1777, were destroyed in the 1822 fire in Oulu, but the present stone church could be built using the preserved stone walls as a frame. The church's most notable work of art is a portrait of John the Messiah, painted in 1611.

In the churchyard of the Cathedral Church, there is a Little Sophia church designed for children. The Little Church, surrounded by cherry trees, is modelled on the very first wooden church built on the site in the late 16th century, respecting traditional materials.

This church is part of the Oulu River pilgrimage route.
